What is Counselling and How Can it Help?

Most of us have people who listen to our worries and problems all the time - partners, family and friends,  neighbours, colleagues, doctors, etc.  But sometimes, especially when negative thoughts and feelings become entrenched, it can be helpful to talk to a counsellor who is outside of your immediate circle.

Counsellors are trained professionals who can work with you in a confidential, safe and non-judgemental environment to enable you to explore difficulties you might be having in any area of your life. A counsellor can offer objectivity and  perspective which may be difficult for those with whom you are most closely involved.

A counsellor will not tell you what to do, but  will endeavour with you to create new ideas for understanding and coping.  Your counsellor will not judge, advise or provide ready-made answers, but can help you to make sense of your unique feelings, thoughts and beliefs.  The insight which comes from this process can increase your sense of having more options, no longer feeling "stuck" with familiar patterns.

Perhaps most importantly, your counsellor will provide encouragement and support as you work towards change.

Counsellors usually work with clients over an extended period, involving several sessions.
